Long before music videos became standard, Jac Holz Long before music videos became standard, Jac Holzman had an idea: create a film to help introduce The Doors’ debut album and first single, “Break On Through.”

Directed by Mark Abramson and filmed entirely on Jac’s 16mm camera, the performance footage was shot on a dark soundstage with colorful lighting and later synced to the studio version of “Break On Through.” The film was then distributed to television stations, theaters, and music venues to help introduce audiences to the band.

Jerry Hopkins, photographer and Rolling Stone jour Jerry Hopkins, photographer and Rolling Stone journalist who accompanied the band to Mexico, described the scene in these photos as:

“From El Acuario the group went to the Plaza de Garibaldi (named for the Italian revolutionary), where mariachi bands come together each night in an informal outdoor concert-hiring hall... Jim and Ray and the others had their pictures taken with one of the bands, then walked across the square to Salon Tenampa, the neighborhood’s noisiest mariachi bar, where Morrison had his portrait sketched, paid an outrageous price for the tray the waiter was using to deliver the group’s drinks, and joined everyone in tossing down several tequilas.” - Jerry Hopkins

Hopkins wrote about the trip in ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE.

“Spanish Caravan” brought a different flavor into The Doors catalog. Written by Robby Krieger as a showcase for his flamenco guitar style, the song pulled inspiration from Isaac Albéniz’s “Asturias” and blended it into something distinctly Doors.
