I've been listening to the post-Morrison albums a bit this week for the first time in a while. I've always assumed that Other Voices was recorded in the aftermath of Morrison leaving for Paris and Manzarek, Densmore and Krieger hanging out at the Workshop and carrying on with their recording. Morrison then dies and they decide to continue.
However, I've read recently the theory that the basic tracks for Down On The Farm, I'm Horny, I'm Stoned and Wandering Musician being recorded during the LA Woman sessions due to Jerry Scheff playing on them.
Assuming that Wikipedia is accurate, Ray Neapolitan played bass on Ships w/ Sails (i.e. who played on most of Morrison Hotel, recorded in late '69) along with Willie Ruff on acoustic bass, Jack Conrad played on In The Eye Of The Sun, Variety Is The Spice Of Life and Tightrope Ride, and Wolfgang Melz played on Hang Onto Your Life.
Four different bass players suggests four separate sessions for the album took place, with four (five if you count Ruff) bass players being booked. A similar thing applies for Full Circle (three bassists).
Can anyone confirm when the sessions took place and what was recorded at which session? I suppose if the sessions were at the Workshop, we'll never know, but I'd appreciate any information I can get. If they really did record the three Jerry Scheff tunes during the LA Woman sessions, or immediately afterwards, it looks like that LA Woman sessions box (which may never happen) needs to include more than just the LA Woman tunes.
