I was just curious as to why he would choose that particular location.  From my understanding, he is way way south of the border in a town known for its silver mining.  I'm sure he won't, but I would love for him to write a book.  If he's waited this long, I don't see him doing it.  He has such a wealth of knowledge on the subject of Jim and The Doors.

He's supposedly making silver jewelry for a living, and Taxco is renowned for its beautiful silverwork--jewelry, dishes, flatware, etc. Some of the most beautiful and expensive silver items in the world are from Taxco.

As for why he would go to Old Mexico to live in the first place, possibly two reasons: I've heard that he'd racked up a number of DUIs and was looking at significant jail time if he screwed up again; and

A lot of older Americans used to retire to Old Mexico (as we New Mexicans call it) because it's a lot easier to live on the typical small pension/SS payment in that country. I think a lot fewer of us geezers are considering Old Mexico now than used to be the case because of the increase in gang violence and of the drug cartels slugging it out, but that may essentially be a border problem. I haven't really looked into it.

P.S.  Babe supposedly did write a book about his time with Jim, but one day (back in the 80s? 90s?)--when he was living with Paul Ferrara on Paul's ranch outside Las Vegas, NM--the story goes that he set the MS on top of his car while he unlocked it, then forgot and drove off while the MS blew all over northern New Mexico.

Apparently Babe took that as a sign from the gods--or from Jim--that he really shouldn't do a book, so he apparently gave up the idea.

That's an old, old story btw--can't even begin to remember where I heard or read it--so I can't vouch for its authenticity.  Does have the ring of truth, though, doesn't it? (Especially if you know how godawful windy it can get in these parts...)

Robby's book? You mean John's? (Haven't read it--haven't read any of the books except NOHGOA--awful experience, literally made me sick--Break On Through and Ray's.) Doesn't really seem fair to Jim, you know? Although I might read Robby's if he ever gets around to writing one, which I doubt. I know there've been rumors for years that he was working on one, but if so where is it?  Posted Image

Thanks for the information!  I've always found Babe to be an interesting character...at least in the books I've read. I'm retiring at the end of this year (51 years of age this coming October) and I've certainly looked into retiring outside of the country.  I agree.  Mexico seems like kind of a scary place these days.  Cayo, Belize is looking pretty inviting though.

Many Canadians are retiring in Belize (English language)  Harrison Ford refused to say in Belize when filming the Mosquito Coast.  He slept on a yacht off the coast.  Funny he has a place on an island off West Vancouver now - probably one of many.  You are lucky - I cannot retire until 60.

I definitely like the fact that English is the primary language there.  Whether or not I'm brave enough to make the move remains to be seen.  I'm in education.  I'm paying dearly for the privilege of early retirement after 26 years of service to the tune of over $36,000 (buying 2.3 years of social security credit).  This way I can get 70% of my salary in pension (80 and Out Rule).  Life is too short to be greedy is my new motto.

Hang in for four more years (55) and spend summer vacation down there to get a feel.  You will be surprised what 2 months of good vacation can do to the other 10.  Also in education - spend mine on the 50th parallel kayaking.

Taxco is a beautiful hill town, and a very friendly place (or it was when I visited in the 90's). The surrounding countryside made me think of an unspoiled southern California.

Boy am I slow on the uptake. I totally missed your snark the first time around.

And I agree with you--for how long now have we been hearing that Robby's going to write a book/is writing a book/is about to publish a book? Oy...Posted Image  Posted Image

007, isn't Babe Hill one of his biker friends? Hole in the wall bars; jukebox & pool table? Leave it at that... maybe Babe wants things left at hole in the wall

Nice outlaw/Butch Cassidy reference there, pard. Was it deliberate? Posted Image

PS: It's true Babe kinda looked like a biker, but he wasn't as far as I know. More of a boater I'd say, since he was an oceanographer by profession and probably skippered The Doors' 30' Chris-Craft more often than not.

Seems like he's doing what Jim wanted to do skipping town to Paris--getting away from the bullshit--kindred spirits indeed. Good for him, hopefully all is well down in Mexico...

lol, you know everything...had no idea they had a 30' whatyousaid...
Anyway, for you Mizz Scarlett & Oak, I don't exactly have total recall to my threads; so, I probably deserved to be erased by FamiliarFreak, if indeed, that was the case...So, are all you East Coast people ok???
