IIRC Ron Howard was originally rumored to direct the Doors movie, and I remember being a little nonplussed at that, thinking he was a bit too family-friendly and white bread for such a project. I was absolutely over the moon at the news that Oliver Stone was going to do it, since at that time Salvador was high on my list of favorite films--I'd taped it off cable and was watching it several times a week.
By the time The Doors was released I knew better, though, and so I've never seen it and most likely never will. I mean, Ray hated it, Salli hated it, Kennealy was in it. What more do I need to know?
These days I can't help thinking what a different--and far, far better and more accurate-- film it would have been if Ron Howard had directed, because I'd be willing to bet money that he'd have done the obvious and cast Johnny Depp in the lead, plus he'd have used the script written by Randall Jahnson (who was "mentored" by an old friend of mine who'd actually met Jim--the "Tom" of Ballroom Days) instead of ditching Jahnson's script and writing an entirely new film based on his own twisted idea of who and what Jim was.
But I don't think Stone sees his version of Jim as negative. That's his idea of a hero man.
As for actors, I can't think of anybody now that Johnny Depp is too old to play someone nearly half his age. As a matter of fact, I believe Depp was considered for the role originally but Kilmer got it because he'd given Stone a tape of him singing some of Jim's songs in (more or less) Jim's voice.
What a missed opportunity! I don't think there's any way in hell Depp would have allowed Stone to make a caricature of Jim as he apparently did with Kilmer. For one thing--and if I'm remembering correctly--Depp and Jim's son Cliff used to hang out back in the Viper Room days, and I'm convinced that was why Depp was so happy to do the narration for When You're Strange.
In fact, right after The Doors there was talk about making a movie out of Danny Sugerman's autobiography Wonderland Avenue and starring Johnny Depp--but with Depp playing DANNY (!!!) and Kilmer reprising his role as Jim. I remember thinking that was the dumbest casting imaginable; I thought the then-teenaged Elijah Wood would be perfect as Danny, and of course JD would finally get the role he was born to play.
I still think so, and I can't help but wonder if losing the role to Kilmer was one of the major disappointments of Johnny Depp's life. It's certainly one of mine...
Anyway, If we're gonna go by that standard again (ability to sing) then Jimmy Fallon is the obvious choice to play Jim this time around, don't you think? He not only sounds like Jim, he looks a heck of a lot more like him than Kilmer ever did. At least he's got dark hair...
Kilmer was a pretty boy--I remember seeing him in his first big movie (a spy spoof the name of which I've totally forgotten) and thinking his Elvis impersonation was a hoot & a half--but never in a million years could I have imagined him playing Jim. He didn't resemble Jim in the least, even with his straight blondish hair dyed and permed.
(Incidentally, there's photo for sale on eBay right now that's supposedly of Jim, but I took one look and knew it was Kilmer. How did I know this? Because it's a side view of "Jim" at the mic, and "Jim's" thigh and butt are waaay too big to be the real thing. I understand Kilmer lost a lot of weight for the role, but IMO he didn't lose enough...

I saw them in concert only once, the 18th(?) of January 1970 at the Felt Forum in NYC, and the thing I remember most is their professionalism. (It was a Sunday--by the time I found out about their appearance all the Saturday shows had sold out in less than 24 hours so I didn't have a choice). I stayed for the second show because the first had seemed more like a rehearsal than a performance, and Jim acknowledged that at the beginning of the second show, saying something about how it took them awhile to get warmed up.
Anyway, they didn't knock my socks off but they were tight and totally, completely professional. I'd seen the Stones just a couple of months earlier and remember to this day how sloppy they were, and how often Jagger's surprisingly thin voice was drowned out by the band.
That wasn't even close to being the case with The Doors--Jim's big, gorgeous voice dominated every song, seemingly without effort, until it finally gave out long after the scheduled end of the show--IIRC it was close to 3:00 a.m. before he finally called it quits.

Wouldn't Johnny Depp be a little short to have played Jim? I'm not sure how tall he is, but he always appears short onscreen to me. I always thought actor Jason Patric may have been able to pull off playing Jim when he was younger. Here's a pic: http://www.starscolo...n-patric-03.jpg

WIth all that being said, I feel if there is going to be another movie about the Doors, it should a movie based on the musical/lyrical DNA of Jim and The Doors. I am fairly confident that most folks would say that the Doors are a visual band, filled with an array of imagery in their songs. Why not put the lyrics, imagery, b-side/live in concert material, put it in a caldron, stir it up, pour it out, and see what you get?!
There seems to be a current trend (and rightfully so) of movies that focus on the lyrics and imagery of the musician or band. The good thing is they are all very different from the next, and with creative minds, I think this new brand of filmmaking could really change things in the music/film world combo. For example, you got current films and musicals like ABBA (Momma Mia) Bob Dylan’s (I’m not there) The Beetles (Across the Universe) - all done in different and unique fashions.
Though my journey/experimental project has come to an end, I created a concept script that would pay tribute to the Doors in a very powerful, spirited, coming of age story of John Rison told through the DNA of the Doors material.
