I picked up this new Butterfly release.  Sound quality is excellent.  Thought folks might find the description of the 4 track tapes interesting, as The Doors were likely recorded in a similar fashion a month earlier.  My guess is Fillmore had a couple of 4 tracks for overlapping recording on offer to record labels to record their acts for a fee.

The Butterfly was recorded in this track configuration according to the liner notes:

Track 1: vocals
Track 2: guitar
Track 3: organ
Track 4: drums and bass

From my listening it appears no effort was made to mic the audience so you apparently only hear applause from the bleed through of stage mics...

Anyway, here are the liner notes about the 4 track tapes.

It would appear the Fillmore had two 4 track recorders (for staggered overlap recording).  The Iron Butterfly Fillmore liner notes speculate the recorder used on the April 1968 Fillmore show was probably an Ampex 440.  Here's a vintage 1968 ad of that unit.  Ampex AG 440  Can you imagine how phenomenal the Doors March 1968 gigs at the same venue would sound if the tapes surface?  Holy Grail!!

There are 4 black and white photos of the band performing, but they are small thumbnails and there is no caption indicating when the photos were taken.

My THINKING on all of this is the guys know whether or not any Fillmore shows exist or if the Seattle shows in the Eagle Auditorium from '67 exist or same town if the Moore Theatre does in-fact have a 1970 Doors' concert.The guys know whether or not there are any complete filmed concerts of them (ie. Toronto,Boston 70 or perhaps others that WE are not even aware of).If the Dallas shows of 12/1970 or even their final gig in New Orleans were recorded to soundboard or an audience recording.Like a better quality sounding early Dallas show.

Dave D. is doing the archiving and i am sure he has his cronies scouring the various places for such recordings.If unable to aquire,a mere verification that in-fact they exist.And frpom there hopefully somewhere down the road cutting some sort of deal to aquire.

Problem is,what's the point of them telling us that yes in-fact the Fillmore shows were recorded and from what we heard they sopund amazing,if,they are unable to purchase them.For whatever reason.

Let's say in-fact (a long mentioned rumor) that Paul R. had in his possession the black & white concert from the Rock and Roll Revival in Toronto on 9-13-69.The Doors know that his estate has it,but trying to aquire it there is so much red tape,as they say,there is no point telling us that in fact it was filmed.

Same holds true about their last few concerts.They can talk till their red in the face about how poor N.O. was,but most of us would stil love to have it.If they know that IT DOES EXIST but they cannot aqure it (or will not pay asking price) why would they tell us about it.

So,asking questions about these types of things directly to Jeff or asking Dave D.,do you really think,BELIEVE they are gonna be straight up with us?I mean,i'd like them to,but it's pointless really,because they are in no position to aquire these materials.For whatever reason.They might have the money but they are a business and even though we state (some of us do anyway) it's an investment.It is there band,music and money.

But,in closing,i'm sure they have a real good idea of what is out there.I FIRMLY beilieve this.There surprised now and then,no doubt.But when these so-called rumors of a complete filmed Boston 1970 show or Toronto for that matter keep popping up,it is clear there has got to be something there.And they probably know these exist.No the folks that filmed the show(s).But,again,what is the point of telling us,if they are either not in a position to purchase these.Or just are unwilling to do so.

But,i ramble on and on.

Man, those old warhorse 4 track machines make me salivate.... I used to use those things, until they came down in price and became 4 track quarter inch tape machines that you could use at home. Back in the mid or late '70's. And I bought the Iron Butterfly discs. They blew me away! Not only great performances, but I could NOT believe these were 40 year old recordings and we didn't even know they existed! Wow! Gives hope to finding some Doors stuff, does it not?! I'm sure Dave D. and others are always on the lookout, tracking down every lead. God, I had a lead on buying the actual mike stand that Jim destroyed that night in New Orleans! I worked on that deal for a year before I kinda gave up. The people who had it just weren't sure where it was (I think their mom took it after the show that night, as it lay there broken up on the stage.....). But they tell me they'll keep looking for it. I'd buy it if it weren't TOO much money, assuming they ever find it-

I am astounded why the fans do not acquire the tapes they want.

Lets say the seller of N.O. wants 100.000$, well then get 100 hundred fans to chip in 1000$ and you can buy the tape.

For all I know you could make the owner an offer of 50.000$, and maybe he will sell it, this way it will only be 500$ per person.

The Doors could sue the tape holder if copies were done publically.  He owns the physical tape, but not the "content".

There's no guarantee that the tape would leak out beyond those 1,000 tape holders, and ill will would occur if the tape was leaked meaning further tape deals wouldn't happen.

The Doors haven't been receptive towards "fan funded" projects.  

The Doors prefer losing $1mil on the WYS documentary than buy up every uncirculated tape/copyright.

Hundreds of deals are done each year on auction sites, where you are able to buy recordings, photos, etc.

What you don´t buy is the copyright! But you buy the physical product.

And of course a group of people is able to buy the tapes and movies of The Doors. Then they can sit and hold hands while listening to Jim smashing the microphone stand.

I am baffled why people haven´t acquired the New Orleans tape and the Isle of Wight footage.

How come The Doors lost a million dollars on WYS?

they (The Doors) could and should buy those tapes, until it's too late and the tapes are too old can't repaired... my opinion...
we are happy to get those Bright Midnigth Tapes and Vancouver, Matrix and on and on tapes... and we thanc 'em for...but maybe in a few years... there is nothing more to release...and NO...No one is happy to buy the NEXT Best of SHIT with another photo from Jim (young lion) he hated so much
...so then they could release that stuff... i will hope for "and PLEASE, release it"

Lots of Doors collectors are sharks and can't trust each other.  Plus if the tape leaks then all the "investors" have nothing to show for it.

A fan-funded project aquiring tapes would get these tapes publically available and create a chain of events to loosen up other recordings free-up.

The IOW wouldn't deal with private collectors, just proper labels.

There was a quote of $3m somewhere for WYS.  Fans can figure out the theatrical boxscore, PBS and other tv licensing and the DVD/Blu relase and know it doesn't come near the $3m spent.  I don't think the film fulfilled it's intended goal of replacing the Oliver Stone movie.  But if the Film meant all their film footage got commited to HD, then great.
