Hello Jeff,

Your thoughts on the possibility of:

a.) Blu Ray of COMPLETE Hollywood Bowl 1968, transferred from the original 16mm unedited source reels and then redited in high definition
b.) New 5.1 surround mix from Botnick
c.) Companion compact disc of the complete concert

The 1987 home video release probably had it's 16mm film elements transferred to u-matic tape (standard back in the day) for editing at horizontal resolution of a mere 330 lines. Remember this was intended in 1987 for release on consumer grade VHS tape, which yielded only 240 lines of low resolution visual information.

Fast forward to 2009. If they digitally scanned the original source 16mm reels at several thousand lines of resolution, created a new edit digitally, color corrected digitally, cleansed the print digitally, and then downsampled the final edit to 1080 lines for Blu Ray, the results could look quite stunning visually. It would be a snap to remove lint, scratches and imperfections digitally compared to the primitive and even barbaric technology available back in 1987 for home video production.

Add to this a high resolution 5.1 mix and you've got one hell of a great product to warrant a re-edit.

There were also some great suggestions by others here on this board of offering multiple camera angles on the Blu Ray disc. At a minimum the Blu Ray should be re-edited by an objective third party director. The 1987 edit leaves things to be desired. Incomplete and somewhat indulgent.  Please lose the exploding Doors logo :)

The slow mo photography (probably done in-camera back in 1968 by increasing the filming speed) is quite dated and could be corrected digitally to run at normal speed.

Any chance of this happening as part of a near or long term product roadmap?

Thanks!

There has yet to be a complete Hollywood bowl soundtrack cd. For one thing, the video was incomplete, missing all of 'Hello I Love You' and half of 'Spanish Caravan'. Plus the audio cd excluded any songs already represented on 'Absolutely Live' (such as WTMO, Backdoor man, etc)- so the Hollywood Bowl cd was slim pickings...

Rothchild apparently edited in some of Jim's vocals on the 1987 Hollywood Bowl home video / EP cd from 1970 Absolutely Live concerts!  Some have said Jim's mic was cutting out at the Hollywood Bowl and not usable on the 68 multitracks, hence then need to edit in vocal coverage from 1970 multitrack concerts.  However, others have contested this and stated Rothchild just wanted to paste in what he felt were better vocals from other concerts to make the Hollywood show "better."   As for what is the truth of the matter, I have no idea.   Although it should be noted the version of Light My Fire on Alive She Cried (1983) was a heavily edited composite from several different 1970 concerts, showcasing Rotchchild's penchant for patchwork editing and presenting live composites as single performances.  The funny thing about the "Light My Fire" quiltwork on Alive She Cried is that you hear Ray's vox organ from 1969 at the Aquarius edited with his Gibson keyboard he used at the 1970 shows. The instruments have a different timbre and blew the lid open on the cobbled together nature of the track.

Jim's voice during the final part of light my fire has been replaced with the final part of light my fire played at felt forum ny shows in 1970.

If you have the last n.y. box set compare light my fire in CD3 from 8:31 min and the version of the hollywood bowl, they re the same :)

Jim sang in a very different way at hollywood bowl (listening to the bootleg) maybe Jim exceeded a bit too much trying to personalize it and Botnick preferred a more "classical" ending ? :)

Interesting. If what you are saying is correct, this would tend to suggest that Jim's vocal track is intact and not damaged on the 1968 source multitracks for Hollywood Bowl.  Therefore, Rothchild may have pulled vocal tracks from 1970 shows not out of necessity, but rather for creative license.

Back when they were repairing it there were a couple of news stories which explained in a decent amount of detail what happened to the vocal and how they fixed it. However, I tend to believe it is a mix of two techniques - repair and replacement. For instance, Robby's guitar on Spanish Caravan has been overdubbed for no apparent reason. This leads me to conclude that the overdubs were sometimes out of necessity, and sometimes out of preference.

Jeff

Click here, and check out this fantastic Elvis Presley live performance, remixed by none other than Bruce Botnick!

Back in 2000, director Rick Schmidlin was hired by Turner to comb through the MGM salt mines and redit the 1970 documentary, "Elvis That's the Way it Is."   Rick went back to the original 35mm negatives and found performances unused in the original film.

Bruce Botnick was hired to mix the 16 track live tapes for stereo and 5.1.  The results of the 2000 redit/remix of the Elvis documentary are phenomenal!  Note the fantastic quality of the video.

The Doors at Hollywood Bowl was filmed in 16mm (I believe a 4 or 5 man film crew) and recorded on 8 track.    While the Doors concert wasn't filmed as well as the Elvis documentary, a high resolution re-edit of the complete show directed by someone like Rick Schmidlin and a remix by Botnick, could still dramatically improve the quality of one of the few live performances of the Doors to be filmed in their prime.

If there is a political issue about re-editing the Hollywood Bowl from scratch, Ray Manzarek's incomplete 1987 directorial edit could still be tagged on to the Blu Ray as a bonus feature.

Thoughts?

(Trivia:  Elvis' bassist in this video (Jerry Scheff) played bass on the LA Woman album.  One month after this Aug. 1970 Elvis performance, Elvis took his show on the road to Miami.  It is reported that Jim Morrison went to see Elvis' Miami 1970 concert during the time he was in the city for the trial.)

seems to be true. according with shaw morrison attended a elvis concert with BABE and FRANK on early september '70 during a break of miami trial among sept 3 to sept 13.
91 interview with steven Wheeler
LISCIANDRO: Sugerman's book offended those who knew Morrison best, according to Lisciandro. "Many of Jim's closest friends find that book very objectionable. I call it 'Nothing Here But Lots Of Lies,' because it's full of bullshit. You have to realize that despite what he says, Danny Sugerman did not know Jim Morrison. If you think that a fourteen-year-old can go in a bar and drink with someone, you're crazy. That never happened.
"I know for a fact that Jim did not like Danny," he goes on to say. "Jim told me on numerous occasions that Danny was a nuisance. But because Jim was a nice guy, he was kind enough to give Danny a few minutes of his time. Danny was always pestering Jim. So those stories of Danny having dinner or doing his homework at Jim and Pamela's apartment are hilariously ridiculous. That never happened."

BAM 7th March 1981
PAUL ROTCHILD : Danny Sugarman (co-author of the book) is a fan of The Doors who took Jerry Hopkins' original manuscript and destroyed it. Danny didn't interview me. Jerry did. Danny then changed a lot of my interview to hearsay that other people did. I'm furious about that book and so is everyone else I've talked to who is quoted in it. It's a great piece of sensationalism, very little of which holds to historical fact. The general shape of it is correct, but Jim is sensationalized rather spectacularly, and the best parts of Morrison are not there. The people who really helped The Doors' career are treated in a very cavalier manner, and the only people who come off well in my opinion are the groupies and syocpants who were hanging around the band and close to Danny Sugarman who was a groupie himself".
There's only one thing in the whole process that bothers me, and that is Danny Sugarman's book. If Jim Morrison were alive today, he'd be livid about that book. Not because of the truth it tells, but because of the lies it maintains. Like Sugarman's trying to keep going the myth that Jim might still be alive! That is pure, total, unmitigated bullshit. If Danny had sat there where your sitting and listened to Pam after she came back from Paris, he wouldn't be trying to perpetuate this myth - and that's what it is.

Elvis Presley performed in Miami, Florida on September 12, 1970.

This is the show Jim Morrison attended.

Here are candid photos of the actual concert:

Here's a review of the Sept. 12, 1970 Miami concerts.

Elvis played two sets that day, one in the afternoon and one in the evening.

I would imagine Jim attended the evening show?

Elvis Gets It Together In Miami

Miami, FL. September 12th 1970 matinee show

By Carol Ann Meyers

I saw King Elvis do his thing "LIVE" onstage, September 12, 1970 at beautiful Miami Beach Convention Center. It was complete pandemonium! Both 3 pm and 9 pm shows were sell-outs of 12, 000 people... mostly hip, young people. The show was to start at 3:00, so we got there at noon. As did many others, we waited in line until 2:30 when we were let inside. The time passed fast as we watched the crowds demanding to buy an Elvis photo album or a large Elvis poster. These were selling like there was no tomorrow. A 92 degree temperature kept the ice cream and soft drink concessions busy.

In the first half of the show, The Sweet Inspirations did three great numbers. They looked great in gun metal colored pants suits with gold bracelets and neck touches which flashed in the spotlight. A male singing group next sang three songs... then Sammy Shore (Elvis' favorite comic) came on. He lived in this area for seven years. The 35 piece Joe Guercio International Hotel Orchestra were superb in their backing. Elvis' super-terrific 6 man rock combo is sensational. These musicians give out with the loudest, heaviest rock sounds to back our King of Rock as he comes onstage... and throughout the show. The screaming for Elvis was fantastic. It never ceased. He kept the audience laughing when he wasn't singing. My throat and ribs attest to the fact I was among those screechers.

Wow, what a show. Elvis' musicians and back-up singers literally wrap him in a solid wall of waves of rhythmic sound. The P.A. system is the best in the world as Elvis carries with him his own sound men, stage crew, light technicians, and others.... all traveling in a jet airliner on this six city tour. Since his whole tour was a sell-out, with extra shows in some cities as he did in Vegas closing night, by public demand. Elvis wants to do another USA tour soon. He also has asked his promoters to set up a European tour for 1971. Elvis is scheduled to return to the International Hotel in 1971. Why not? His recent four week stand there surpassed even his previous two history-making appearances. When Elvis is in Las Vegas, the whole town picks up. As one executive put it, "Elvis continues to break his own records.... a sell-out crowd, every show, every night. Elvis is the only performer thus far to fill this huge International Hotel showroom and balcony as well... every night, every show, turn away crowds. " On tour, Elvis' security protection is tremendous. Guards watch over him.

Elvis dressed in his beautiful white jump suit, heavily beaded collar, light blue fringed wide beaded sash, light blue scarf, long hair... he looked really OUTASIGHT! His singing voice was never better. He vibrates from head to toe... It drives you wild ! He sang about 18 songs, mostly his own hits. I would say the smasher was his frantic version of " Polk Salad Annie. " He got the crowd in a real blow-your-mind state. Oh what a showman, this Elvis. " Wonder Of You, " " I've Lost You, " plus all the rocking things were merely GREAT! His dancing at the end of " Suspicious Minds " is a show stopper for sure. He is in loose, swinging shape. Elvis has made " Love Me Tender " into a regular part of his act and its great. He kisses the girls in the front row at the International Hotel in Las Vegas. Here, the stage was too high, so he kissed hands. Many outstretched hands reached for Elvis. He sings his heart out for his fans and how they love him. Go see the world's number one and ONLY entertainer... ELVIS IN PERSON. If you aren't a fan, you will be. If you are a fan, you will be a bigger one. For here is a super, super star. Elvis is indeed, THE KING!

One interesting thing about Jim going to see this Elvis show in Miami is that only a couple of months later, Elvis' bassist, Jerry Scheff would be recording with the Doors on the LA Woman album.

Thanks, that's fantastic news Jeff!

Were all of Jim's vocal tracks useable or were some damaged?

Any idea of a release date?  Will this be Blu Ray, DVD or both?

Thanks!

Hi Jeff

Thank you.

a.) Will the Blu Ray / DVD of the concert be complete?  Does enough footage exist for a continuous concert?

b.) Will Jim's original vocals from the Bowl be used for the entire show?  Or do some need to be "flown in" from Absolutely Live shows for technical reasons?

c.) Will there be a CD companion release on BMA of the complete show newly mixed by Botnick?

Thanks!
