London Film Festival

When You're Strange is being shown this Friday and Sunday, but tickets are already all sold out.

Does anyone know if WYS has a DVD release date?  I am nowhere close to anyplace that is screening it.

Oct. 18.09.  When You’re Strange has been sold to the UK for theatrical distribution.  A company called The Works has bought it and I’m extremely impressed with their passion for the film. They’ve been tracking the film since Sundance.

There is strong forward momentum on sales to Australia, the Benelux countries, Japan, Germany and all the other major territories including the US. As you can see these deals take months to finalize so keep in mind nothing is definite from this 2nd list until you hear it from me. But, things are happening. Patience.

I would have loved to have been able to have seen it in London this weekend, as it was my birthday on saturday, so would have rounded the weekend off quite nicely.....

Tom Dicillo's documentary "When You're Strange: A Film about the Doors" has already taken to the screens at the London Film Festival in the past week. It may be a festival devoted to film, but that doesn't exclude the subject ever being about music!

The LFF quite often manages to screen some of the bigger and better music documentaries going. The past has seen the likes of Ondi Timoner's "Dig!" which introduced the Brian Jonestown Massacre to a whole new audience. It has also screened the likes of Metallica's "Some Kind of Monster" which notoriously saw the band going into therapy whilst recording their St Anger album.

Also on the bill this year is the inclusion of "The White Stripes Under Great White Northern lights" which focuses on they bands extensive tour across all of Canada.

The London Film Festival is on until 29th October.

I gave up hope of WYS to be released in theaters in the Benelux countries, so this is really really great news.

Poet, fool or bum? A question posed by Lee Hazlewood but applicable to Jim Morrison, the charismatic leader of The Doors, a question that remains frustratingly unanswered by Tom DiCillo’s elliptical and compelling documentary about one of the most important groups of the late Sixties.

In four short years, The Doors recorded some of the defining music of the era, from Light My Fire to LA Woman, while Morrison, seemingly on a wilful course of self-destruction, ended up bloated, alcoholic and ultimately dead in a Paris bathtub.

In tracing the group’s incredible trajectory DiCillo forgoes contemporary interviews in favour of using archive material, some previously unseen, stitched together by a Johnny Depp voiceover and bookmarked by some extraordinary footage, taken from the Doors vocalist’s own experimental film HWY: An American Pastoral, in which an almost Christ-like Morrison traverses California in a black Ford Mustang. DiCillo edits the film in such a way that Morrison hears news of his own death on the car stereo, a refrain that becomes a haunting motif throughout the film.

There’s plenty of meat for aficionados though, including Morrison’s onstage rant at the police at a concert in Newhaven and subsequent arrest, the infamous Miami incident where the singer was accused of exposure, a charge which almost finished The Doors as a touring band, and rare film of him drunk and raging in the studio during the torturously long sessions for The Soft Parade. Through these episodes, the film draws express parallels with the band’s role as cultural pariahs and the volatile political situation in America at the time.

Expertly constructed, DiCillo’s film does lend some understanding of what made The Doors so great but in giving so much screen time to their tragic singer it seems more like an extended love letter to Mr Mojo Risin than a study of his equally deserving but less glamorous bandmates.

     Johnny narrates this film about the legendary band The Doors. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 17, 2009, with a temporary narration by the director, Tom DiCillo.  It also screened with DiCillo's narration on February 7 at the Berlin Film Festival, where the official announcement was made that Johnny would narrate the final version of the film.  DiCillo then made the decision not to screen the film again until Johnny's contribution was added, forcing him to pull out of the South By Southwest Film Festival in March.  Johnny's recording was done sometime between about March 17 and May 20, 2009.  The film screened for the first time with his narration on June 21, 2009 at the Los Angeles Film Festival, with an additional screening on June 24.  DiCillo lauds Johnny's narration as "fantastic" and "crucial": "He brings something very personal to the film." "[Johnny] had been my first choice. My sense was always that the film needed a real actor to perform the narration, someone who could genuinely relate to the Doors and tell the story as if it really meant something to him. He has succeeded."  After attending the screening in Deauville, DiCillo further stated, "Depp’s narration is even stronger than I’d remembered. His presence in the film is quiet, assured, emotional and powerfully intimate."

     When You're Strange is the first feature documentary about this legendary band.  The film contains some never before seen footage of The Doors, who were together from 1965 through Morrison's death in 1971.  It also contains rare footage from Morrison's experimental film, HWY, taken from the original 35 mm negative.

     The film had a private buyers' screening in NYC on June 30 and also one in Paris at around the same time.  The film has secured French theatrical distribution rights for the film through a company called MK2, and British distribution through The Works UK Distribution.  There is much interest in the film among other distributors in the US and abroad, with hopes for some news about a theatrical release soon.

     When You're Strange will next screen at the Viennale (Vienna) Film Festival on October 23 and 24.  It will also screen at the Mar del Plata (Argentina) Int'l Film Festival, which runs November 6 through 15, 2009.  Stay tuned by checking the Johnny Depp Rocks! home page for any breaking news, including additional upcoming film festivals and screenings, or plans for a theatrical release!

Thanks for the kind words, Shebang and cork.  I hope everyone gets a chance to see this documentary soon.  Worth the wait.

We were very lucky that the screening was on June 24, because on June 25, right around the time that the movie screened the previous day, Michael Jackson was rushed to UCLA Medical Center, and all the surrounding streets were closed, including the area where the Festival was being held.
